Gaming zone: console

Since my notebook died I earned some “boring old mainstream-y fart” points by obtaining an xbox 360.

I continued exchanging goods for money with Bioware and played Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age II.

THERE BE SPOILERS.

DAO I loved, while DA2 was merely “play for completeness’ sake”:  as a minor grievance I’d like to mention the slightly weird combat control strategy and the reusing of dungeons over and over again. The worst part however is the story itself, along with lots of its characters. First of all, there is no mentionable story arch to get you interested in the world.
Then we have the completely insane “tragic events” (including Frankenstein-ed family members; I almost laughed) and the emo companions with radicalised views – honestly, there was a SINGLE companion I wasn’t tempted to try and send away during the whole game. All the other companions are  [mage-haters|terrorists|selfish bastards], and whiny to boot. The grand finale (at least if you take the mages’ side) was confusing at best, and some reading in gamers’ boards showed that I am not the only person who found the course of events – disturbing, to say the least.

Graphics and combat animation were great, I’ll readily admit that. NPC styling – not so much.

Maybe they should just have written a book instead from what they had collected on their storyboard, and prepared for Dragon Age III – watch the the escapist‘s review too – fun!.

Looking forward to the Mass Effect series now.
